October marks Careers in Construction Month, a nationwide effort championed by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) to shine a light on the rewarding and vital careers in construction that build our communities.

Why This Month Matters

  • High demand in the building industry. From carpenters and electricians to project managers and architects, the construction sector in Pierce County and across Washington continues to grow, and with that, so do the opportunities for ambitious professionals.
  • Careers beyond the jobsite. Many rewarding roles in construction aren’t limited to building homes or jobsite labor. You’ll find careers in planning, design, sales, marketing, sustainability, safety, and more, all of which are vital parts of the Pierce County home building industry.
  • Diversity and inclusivity in construction. The construction industry offers career paths for people with different skills, educational backgrounds, and interests. There’s space for creativity, problem-solving, and leadership, whether you’re looking to join a Pierce County home builders association or start as a trades professional.

How NAHB Encourages Engagement

The NAHB provides a toolkit for associations, chapters, and individuals to celebrate and promote careers in construction. Some suggested events and themes include:

  • Proclamations — Encourage local governments to officially recognize October as Careers in Construction Month.
  • Outreach to youth — Partner with Boys & Girls Clubs, local schools, and student chapters to introduce students to the many construction industry opportunities.
  • Young Professionals Week — A dedicated week during October for mentorship, networking, and professional development aimed at young people entering the construction industry.
  • Careers in Construction Day — A day for volunteering, site tours, or public events to celebrate the people building homes and communities in Pierce County.
  • Social media & storytelling — Share real stories, photos, and videos of professionals in construction, highlighting the pride, skill, and craftsmanship they bring. Use hashtags like #CareersInConstruction and #CICM2024.

Tips for Organizations & Individuals Eyeing Construction Industry Opportunities

  1. Be visible. Post on social media, host open houses or job site tours, or invite local schools to visit a project under construction.
  2. Tell those stories. Spotlights on real workers—why they chose the field, what they do day to day, and how their careers have grown—are powerful recruitment tools.
  3. Make it interactive. Consider hands-on demonstrations, mock tool stations, virtual reality tours, or “try a trade” workshops at Pierce County events.
  4. Build partnerships. Collaborate with schools, workforce programs, industry associations, and civic leaders to broaden your reach and attract young professionals in construction.
  5. Measure impact. Track engagement, signups, media mentions, or new applicants to see what tactics resonate for future years.

The Future of Builders: Embracing Sustainable Building Practices! https://masterbuilderspierce.com/embracing-sustainable-building-practices-future-of-builders/ https://masterbuilderspierce.com/embracing-sustainable-building-practices-future-of-builders/#respond Mon, 27 Nov 2023 18:00:00 +0000 https://masterbuilderspierce.com/?p=7492 Embracing sustainable building practices

The construction industry is at a crossroads. As we face the challenges of climate change and resource depletion, the need for sustainable building practices has never been greater. The future of builders is in embracing sustainable building practices, and in this blog post, we will explore the key trends and innovations shaping the industry.

Green Building Materials for Sustainable Building Practices

One of the most significant shifts in construction practices is the adoption of green building materials. Traditional construction materials such as concrete and steel are resource-intensive and contribute to high carbon emissions. In response, builders are turning to sustainable alternatives like bamboo, recycled steel, and engineered wood. These materials are not only eco-friendly but often cost-effective as well.

 Energy Efficiency

Energy-efficient buildings are becoming the norm rather than the exception. From energy-efficient insulation to solar panels and smart building management systems, the construction industry is rapidly integrating technologies and practices that reduce energy consumption and decrease a building’s carbon footprint.

MBA sustainable building practices
Prefabrication and Modular Construction

Prefabrication and modular construction methods are revolutionizing the way buildings are put together. These techniques reduce waste, save time, and promote sustainability. With components manufactured in controlled environments, there is less material waste and greater precision in construction.

Green Certifications for Sustainable Building Practices

Sustainability certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) have gained prominence in the construction industry. These certifications set standards for environmentally responsible construction and provide a framework for architects and builders to follow.

Net-Zero Buildings

The concept of net-zero buildings, which produce as much energy as they consume, is gaining traction for sustainable building practices. These buildings are designed with a holistic approach, incorporating energy-efficient design, renewable energy sources, and water conservation practices. Achieving a net-zero building can significantly reduce a structure’s impact on the environment.

Smart Buildings

Smart technology is making buildings more sustainable and efficient. From automated lighting and HVAC systems to sensors that optimize energy use, smart buildings are reducing resource waste and enhancing occupant comfort.

Sustainable Design Principles

Architects and designers are embracing sustainable design principles that focus on integrating buildings with their natural surroundings. This includes optimizing natural lighting, passive heating and cooling, and using landscaping to reduce energy needs.

sustainable building practices
Circular Economy Practices

The construction industry is increasingly adopting circular economy practices, which involve recycling and reusing materials to reduce waste and minimize the extraction of new resources. By repurposing materials and minimizing waste, the industry is moving toward a more sustainable future.

Conclusion

The future of construction is undoubtedly tied to sustainability. From green building materials and energy efficiency to innovative construction methods and smart technology, the industry is evolving to meet the demands of a changing world. Embracing sustainable building practices is not just an environmental necessity; it’s also a smart business decision. As the construction industry continues to adapt to the challenges of the 21st century, it is clear that the path forward is a sustainable one. By adopting these practices and staying informed about emerging technologies, construction professionals can lead the way towards a greener, more sustainable future.

Pierce County Families Priced Out of Housing Market https://masterbuilderspierce.com/priced-out-data-pierce-county/ https://masterbuilderspierce.com/priced-out-data-pierce-county/#respond Fri, 02 Jun 2023 18:01:11 +0000 https://masterbuilderspierce.com/?p=7247 Communications Director Bailee Butcher
MBA Pirced Out Pierce County

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) put our their 2023 Priced Out Estimates, showing how higher home prices and interest rates affect people’s abilities to own a home.

In the Tacoma-Lakewood Metro Area, the median price of a new home is $805,128, meaning you will need a minimum income of $238,470 to even qualify. At this price, over 97 percent of households in Pierce County are already priced out of the market. And for any additional $1,000 added in fees or regulations, another 245 people will no longer qualify for a house.

Unfairly Priced Out

Master Builders Pierce advocates for homeownership for all. Did you know, that the number one way to build generational wealth in the United States is still through homeownership?

Unfortunately, by adding more regulations or delays in the building process, it only prices out those lower and middle economic classes from owning a home. The state of Washington is in a housing crisis. The more housing that is able to be built, the more homes available of all kinds of ownership opportunities and will lower the cost of housing and rent. When there is a lack of supply, the demand is high, and the more it will cost for a home.

We are still recovering from the COVID pandemic that severely impacted timelines through governmental delays, lack of supplies and theft of materials. The last thing needed is increased regulations that get passed onto the homeowner making it increasingly difficult to own a home.

If you have any questions about the 2023 Priced Out data, please contact Master Builders Association of Pierce County Communications Director Bailee Butcher at bwicks@masterbuilderspierce.com.

Mental Health Awareness in the Construction Trades https://masterbuilderspierce.com/national-mental-health-awareness-month/ https://masterbuilderspierce.com/national-mental-health-awareness-month/#respond Mon, 01 May 2023 17:07:04 +0000 https://masterbuilderspierce.com/?p=7210 Communications Director Bailee Butcher
National Mental Health Awareness Month

May is National Mental Health Awareness Month. Talking to your employees and coworkers about mental health has always been important, but since the pandemic, rates have increased and have caused an even greater need for awareness.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the construction/skilled trades industry ranks second highest in suicide rates among major industries.

Research shows that up to 90% of people who die by suicide have a mental health condition. Depression is the most common contributing condition, however other conditions may impact suicide rates including substance use disorders — most commonly alcohol misuse, anxiety, and trauma.

Why are construction suicide rates so high?

There could be many reasons why the construction industry ranks higher on the list than many other professions.

  • Male dominated industry; suicides are higher in men than women.
  • Chronic pain, addiction to medication is a problem for the skilled trades as well.
  • High stress and deadline work.
  • Toughness and strength are valued in the profession. Not sharing feelings or seeking help to prevent looking weak or timid.

No matter the suspected reason, the best outcomes for mental health care is when help is sought out early.

National Mental Health Awareness Month

What you can do to help

A study conducted by The Center of Workplace Mental Health that surveyed 1,175 construction/skilled trades professionals found that the best strategy for positive mental health impact is leadership engagement. Here are some strategies you can implement to create a culture of mental health awareness and well-being:

  • Writing polices into place to assist employees with mental health concerns.
  • Discuss mental health during safety huddles, job site meeting, stand downs, etc.
  • Create a list of resources for employees to use when they reach out or express mental health concern.

By promoting psychological safety in your company, you can mitigate and address concerns of mental health head-on.

Reminder, with your association membership, you may be eligible for an employee health insurance plan. Visit biawhealthtrust.com to learn more.

Celebrate Career and Technical Education Month https://masterbuilderspierce.com/cte/ https://masterbuilderspierce.com/cte/#respond Mon, 13 Feb 2023 19:37:15 +0000 https://masterbuilderspierce.com/?p=6957 Join the Master Builders as we celebrate Career and Technical Education (CTE) month throughout February

What is CTE?

CTE

CTE month aims to raise awareness and ready learners for college and career success. CTE promotes and supports locally-based high school programs that provide real-world technical skills for all students.

Modern education places a heavy emphasis on math, English and history, but with CTE, those subjects are presented with 21st century examples and knowledge.

For example, in math, they can learn how to find the properly measure a room and determine square footage, instead of solving word problems for the same outcome or equation.

Pierce County Skills Center

“The new normal”

Since the pandemic, students have not had a stable learning environment by being forced to online or hybrid teachings. All of this uncertainty has led to more students questioning the college path.

During COVID, many high school students reassessed their career goals. In a time with so many moldable minds and the uneasiness of higher education, CTE can help assist the gap and educate students on other career opportunities.

MBA logo new mockup

Opportunities for the construction industry

Now is the perfect time for the trades to emerge as a viable career option to young people entering the workforce. Nobody can deny the labor shortage skilled trades are facing.

Employee and subcontractor shortages remain widespread and continue to impact the industry, all while student loan debt has risen astronomically.

Exposing students of all ages to the opportunities of a career in trades can tackle the labor shortage head-on.

CTE

How you can help

Member involvement is the key to reaching students countywide. It sounds simple, but just showing up and telling your story and the path that took you to where you are now, excites and educated the students. Signing up to volunteer at trade schools, speaking to classes, attending job fairs and sharing out the scholarship and career opportunities are just a few ways to assist in closing the labor shortage gap.

If you are interested in joining the workforce development committee, or learning about more opportunities to help the labor shortage gap in Pierce County, please contact Advocacy Associate Alex Harrington at aharrington@masterbuilderspierce.com.

L&I Adopts New Fall Protection Standards https://masterbuilderspierce.com/li-adopts-new-fall-protection-standards/ https://masterbuilderspierce.com/li-adopts-new-fall-protection-standards/#respond Sat, 05 Nov 2022 06:00:00 +0000 https://masterbuilderspierce.com/?p=6646 ROII Sponsored Content
fall protection Standards

To align with federal standards, the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) has new fall protection standards going into effect on Nov. 1, 2022.  While training and guidance resources remain under development, the department has provided an overview of the background and changes.

Aligning Washington’s Fall Protection Standards with Federal Requirements

L&I updated its standards after receiving a letter from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). In its letter, OSHA alerted L&I their previous fall protection standards were not as effective as federal standards. Under federal law, Washington’s standards must meet or exceed the standards set forth by OSHA.

Major Changes to Fall Protection Standards

L&I has provided a quick reference guide with major changes indicated. Among other things, the updated standards:

  • Require fall protection when doing roofing work at six feet or higher on a low-pitch roof, instead of the previous 10-foot threshold
  • Change the threshold height from 10 feet to six feet when constructing a leading edge
  • Add the option of a standard guardrail system as a form of fall protection on low-pitched roofs
  • Provide an option to use a safety watch system if appropriate
  • Include a clarifying statement noting when rules require fall protection at four feet or more

Updated Safety Training for Fall Protection Standards Expected Soon

ROII Safety Services Director, Bob White, works closely with L&I and will share their updated training materials when they are available. ROII participants already receive Weekly Safety Topic emails to keep your employees safe.

Are you not a ROII program participant? In the 2018-19 plan year, ROII participants earned an average refund of 53% back on their L&I premiums. That’s some serious cash! If you would like to see how much you could have earned if you were enrolled in ROII, visit https://roii.com/.

If you have any questions about enrollment, please email enroll@roii.com or fill out the inquiry form on their website:  https://roii.com/.

Remember, safety has its rewards – MBA
